An independent film is one made outside of the Hollywood studio system.

The major Hollywood film studios are often referred to as 'The Big Six'. These commands a significant market share, and the budgets tend to be much bigger than those of an independent film. The Big Six are:

- Paramount
- Warner bros.
- 20th Century fox
- Universal
- Columbia
- Walt Disney

Conglomerate: When a large company owns a large number of smaller business’ - Disney, Frozen

Independent: When a business works alone to make and distribute their products

Universal is one of the big six Hollywood companies and Working title is a British owned film and television company.

One disadvantage to being an independent company is that when developing a film the business won't have a lot of funds for the movie. This is a disadvantage because it means the film won't be up to the standards they would have aimed for it to be at, also it means they will need to use less known actors. For example, BBC films had to use not well-known actors for their movie Street Dance.
