+1 channels

The channels which allow you to watch the same shows in the same order an hour later.


BBC is not allowed to have any product placement so will take off the label or replace it with something else they make themselves. Both on radio and on television channels.


Public service broadcasting - PSB

- They are programmes made for the public and so have no advertisements
- They aim to improve society by informing viewers
- Also, strive to entertain the viewers
- Also tries to show the diversity
- Example is BBC
- Remit --> The responsibility of a programme - They promise to enrich peoples lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.
- 'To reflect the UK, its culture and values to the world'

Funding
- 75% of the BBC's funding comes from the license fee (currently costs £147 for colour and £49.50 for a black and white TV license.
The remaining comes from;
- Programme sales
- Publications - Radio times, Good food etc.

Structure of the BBC 

The BBC is a cross-media organization- one of the largest in Europe.
This means it is vertically and horizontally integrated

Vertical Integration
-  In which a media company has the ability to control the production (pre, prod, post), distribution and exchange (consumption/exhibition) of a product

- They have their own buildings and equipment to create their own films. This allows them to create all their products (DVD's) internally, it also allows them to distribute them all themselves.

Advantage
- Complete ownership
- Gain 100% profit
- Won't need to rely on others

Disadvantages
- Owners invest a lot of money which may not succeed
- May use the same political stance



Horizontal Integration
- In which a media company has a number of subsidiary companies that are used to support the marketing of its products

Advantage
- Increased support and awareness

Disadvantage
- Not a lot of profit
- Not much say in what is going to be produced

Synergy - The meaning of business' working together


  • Online and social media services - Through the BBC website and twitter feed - They have their own section on the BBC website
  • Print and media advertising - Through the Radio Times magazine publication
  • Distribution - BBC
  • TV channels - The show can be advertised across different channels (BBC 1,2,3,4)
  • Merchandising - A range of Doctor who merchandise is available to buy
